Themes of your posts
Each post with a line in the Timeline gets 1 to 3 themes, and the name of its series when it is part of one. In Metrics, on the Posts tab, the Themes list puts each theme next to your other posts of the same format, over the last 90 days. On a profile with Instagram and TikTok, you pick the network at the top of the page: themes compare only the posts of that network, with its numbers. Only the Owner and Admins see Metrics.
What the list shows
- How many posts entered each theme.
- The median of each Instagram number, next to the median of your other posts of the same format. For reels, views, reach, saves, shares, watch time and how much was skipped. For carousels and photos, views, reach, saves, shares, followers and profile visits.
- Comments and questions per post, which are Postato's numbers.
Instagram does not say how many followers a reel brought, so no theme of reels speaks of followers.
When there is no comparison
- A theme with fewer than 3 posts shows only as "not enough posts yet".
- A format with fewer than 5 other posts of yours shows how many it has, with no comparison, because a median of so few posts says little.
- Posts under 7 days old stay out of the numbers, because they are still rising. The list shows how many there are.
- A post without an Instagram number stays out of that number alone.
- Stories have themes, but they do not enter the comparison yet. The list only counts them.
- Only posts with a line in the Timeline enter. Up to 20 posts and reels of the last 30 days get a line by themselves, and the list says how many of the posts of 90 days have themes.
A theme on almost every post
A theme has to set a post apart from the others. Postato tries not to use what is true of nearly the whole account, like the main character or the city.
When a theme is still on more than 60% of the posts with themes of the last 90 days, with at least 8 posts, stories left out of that count, it stays on the list with the note "on almost every post", with no numbers. It leaves the comparisons, the sentences, What the best posts have in common, the name suggestions and the lines of the Timeline. It stays on the post: you see it when you open Themes in the … of the line. The Owner and Admins can still rename or merge it. This is worked out on every read: if it drops under the limit, it is back in the comparisons.
Postato also asks the model not to use these themes on the next posts. A name the Postato team marked as too broad during a re-read does not come back by itself, even after it left every post. This only binds what is automatic: you can write that name on a post whenever you want, and then it is yours. A theme you chose, renamed or merged into is never held back.
A series never falls under this rule.
Series
A post joins a series only when it shows by itself that the story goes on: the same characters at the next step, a "tomorrow I'll tell you" paid off, a "part 2", the same event. The same place, a regular character or a shared theme is not enough, and a post that merely comes after an episode stays out. When in doubt, it gets no series. Postato repeats the name on every episode, comparing the post with the last line of each series and with the 5 posts before, stories left out. A new story that grows out of another can open its own series. The first post can stay without the series when nothing in it showed the story would go on: you can add the name in Themes, in the … of the line. A story can be part of a series too, and on the list it is only counted.
The sentence of a theme
A sentence like "Reels about Recipes have 2.1x the saves of your other reels (8 posts, strong pattern)." only shows when the theme passes the same rule as What the best posts have in common, with at least 15 posts of that format. Strong means the difference shows in the 10 best and also in the 10 that follow. Medium, only in the 10 best.
The numbers appear together. That does not mean the theme causes the result.
The mark in the Timeline
After 7 days, a line can show the strongest number of the post next to your usual, like "2.3x the views of your typical reel". It only shows from 1.5x on, with at least 5 other posts of the format in the last 90 days, and it uses Instagram's numbers only.
Fixing themes
- On one post. In the Timeline, open the … beside the date of the post and choose Themes. On a computer, the … shows when you move the mouse over the row. Whoever has the profile can change them. What you save stays, even if the line is written again. If someone else changed them first, Postato tells you and does not save over it.
- Rename or merge. In Themes, open a theme. The Owner and Admins can rename it on every post or merge it into another. A merge cannot be undone. After a rename or a merge, the old name lands on the new theme.
Themes do not enter drafts.
